Dear Ineke,
Thanks for your comment. Indeed the Mumias area was hit hard by the Post Election Violence (POV) of early 2008. Also in the sugarcane area there has been a lot of destruction. This POV has contributed to the circumstance that a notice ...
Dear Lucy,
I regret I overlooked your comment till this morning.
We agree ‘ownership’ is of crucial importance. ‘Ownership’ can be organised in many ways and has to be kept ‘alive’ – ‘meaning full’ over time. The farmers’ comments in your example ...
Dear Simon,
Many thanks for the good points you raised. I comment on your points starting with your point 3 and ending with your point 1.

Dear Julius
Thanks for this remark. I think what you say is very useful. If I repeat your remark in my own wording, you stress the importance of careful preparation and guidance of the decision making process, that the purpose of farmers’ particip...
Dear Lucy,
Nice to receive a comment from you Lucy!
The information on the potential amount of raw milk available to MDL has for an important part been based on discussions with large-scale farmers and existing (independent) milk collection centre...
Dear Alex,
The development mentioned by you is very good. It will benefit the farmers and therefore in the long run also the processors and the sector in general.
Kind regards again,

Dear Willem,
The pleasure is the same to me!!
Concerning your remarks. In our calculations we assumed a plant with a standard capacity of 30,000 L per 8-hour shift. The calculation further assumed that the intake of raw milk would gradually increa...

Dear Bill,
Nice to have contact with you again! Your question is very right. In case (model) calculations show results, which do not seem to correspond with the initiatives from the ‘real world’, then it is high time for the researcher to scratch ...

How did you become interested in dairy development?
Being born and grown-up on a dairy farm, I am interested in dairy development from my early years onwards. After studying agricultural and development economics in Wageningen I worked in dairy training and development projects in Africa for almost 13 years (Zambia and Kenya). Since our return to Holland in 1992, I work for Farmco, a consultancy company focussed on agricultural and livestock development. Besides project co-ordination my work also includes identification and formulation of new projects and the implementation of studies. Much of this work relates to livestock development and the economics of it. Although being back in Holland, it is nice to have in this way still an opportunity to work on dairy development in African countries every now and then.
